Presentation of Easter-greetings to detainees

Saturday reverent Mrs. Arenda Haasnoot, vice-chairman of the General Synod, presented the Easter-greetings to detainees during worship in the Worship in the ‘Koepelgevangenis’ (Dome-prision).jpg‘Koepelgevangenis’ (Dome-prison) in Breda. In the weeks before Easter about 100.000 Easter-cards were sent from the religious congregations to detainees in Dutch and foreign prisons; as well as cards with unstamped post-stamps. Detainees can send this card on to their family. This way their relations as well are included in the attention of the churches.

.jpgThe cards were made by prisoners themselves. Detainees in the detention centre ‘Het Wolvenplein’ (The Wolves-plaza) in Utrecht drew a city of peace on fragile eggshells. In their drawings they expressed their hope for the ‘city of peace’. Prisoners from the Antilles drew typical Antilles houses, Polish prisoners typical Polish houses. They went to work with judiciary reverent Mrs. Folly Hemrica, talked about their dreams and discussed with one and other how they could contribute to their city of peace. This is a special and critical theme, because many of them were put behind bars just because they often caused controversy and insecurity in the city.

United
The detainees greatly appreciated the Easter greeting that were presented Saturday. To them it is a sign that people – in spite of their detention – remain to be united with them.
